Ger in Bert Jansch Guitar Project

Posted on: 4 February, 2019

Ger has been nominated along with some other guitar enthusiasts to be apart of a project honouring Bert Jansch, a seminal figure in the world of finger-picking acoustic guitar playing.
A video of Ger playing a specially built Yamaha guitar will be featured as part of the imaginative project which is called ‘Around the World in 80 plays’ run by the Bert Jansch Foundation, which helps foster new talent in younger musicians.

His own finger-picking style is influenced by the Scottish guitarist who was part of the folk movement of the 1960’s and 70’s that included the likes of John Renbourn, Davey Graham, Micheal O Domhnaill, June Tabor,Dick Gaughan, Maddy Prior , Martin Simpson and many more. From the guitar playing point of view Bert blended blues, jazz and traditional music with his own unique style to create new ways of playing the acoustic guitar-En route unearthing many older ballads like ‘Reynardine’, adding to newer songs like Ewan Mc Coll’s ‘The First Time ever I saw your face’ and of course singing his own compositions including ‘The Needle of Death’.

Ger is going to play a song of his own showing the positive effect hearing Bert’s music had on him as a young guitarist and singer, from hearing him in his early teens in his formative years and into his early twenties especially.
“I’m very glad to be part of this great project that encourages musicianship in younger players and honours one of the a great proponents of solid and honest folk music in a spirit of co-operation and respect” says Ger.
